What's new in Overtown?

I've all the juicy "deets" for anyone who wants to know!

Once a bustling entertainment district nicknamed "Little Broadway" during its heyday in the 1930s, Miami presents a revitalized Overtown still steeped in history but with a renewed sense of vitality, with its exciting lineup of highly anticipated celebrations, ongoing mixed-use projects, new shopping destinations, and upcoming community parks and recreational spots!

Watch out, Miamians — a brand-new OVERTOWN is taking over!

Here are 4 things new to watch for in Overtown.

Two Mixed-Use Projects Are Landing In Overtown — And One Is A Transit-Oriented Development!

Where: across Overtown

You know when we said that Overtown plans to get its "shine" back?

Well, it seems like the "movement" just started with not just one but TWO mixed-use projects in the pipeline — Sawyer's Walk and Overtown Block 19!

Sawyer's Walk (249 NW 6th St.), set to be completed in the summer, is a transformative mixed-use development comprising 1.5 million square feet of affordable housing units, highly demanded retailers, and a 25,000-square-foot public plaza with a pedestrian promenade, outdoor seating, and a children's playground!

The 3.4-acre development, which broke ground in June 2021, is by SG Holdings, a partnership among Swerdlow Group, SJM Partners, Alben Duffie, and Arquitectonica, and was made possible through a collaboration with the City of Miami's Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), Miami-Dade County's Department of Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD), and Commissioners Christine King and Keon Hardemon.

Once completed, Sawyer's Walk will offer the largest affordable senior living community with 578 housing units, value-added retail offerings, and quality office spaces.

In fact, the project was already 100% leased even before it started building — and it just added  175,000 square feet for credit retailers!

Meanwhile, Overtown Block 19 (105 NW 11th Ter.) is a decade-in-the-making mixed-use project recently acquired by three high-profile Miami developers, Property Markets Group (PMG), Lndmrk Development, and Lion Development, for $16.5 million, and will be transformed into a transit-oriented development with market-rate and workforce housing apartments.

The two upcoming developments will also bring over one thousand quality jobs to Overtown, promising affordable rent and the means to thrive and survive amidst Miami's rising daily expenses.

Aldi, Target, And More Famous National Retailers Join Overtown!

Where: 249 NW 6th St, Miami, FL 33136

When: October 2024

Start bidding your farewells to Overtown's bleak and limited dining and retail scene!

Once Sawyer's Walk rises in October 2024, a new Overtown will be reborn, and it's bringing beloved national retailers like Aldi, Target, Ross Dress for Less, Burlington, CVS Drug Store, Tropical Smoothie, and even Starbucks into the mix!

According to the company's press release, Target will occupy 50,000 square feet of Sawyer's Walk's ground retail area, while ALDI is taking over 25,000 square feet of space.

Are you as excited as we are?

We bet!

The "Overtown - Downtown Miami Connection" Wins A $60M Grant

When: 2027

Just in —

The planned Signature Bridge and Heritage Trail connecting West Overtown to East Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami, alongside the highly anticipated Underdeck project, will start to take shape, thanks to the U.S. Department of Transportation's $60 million grant!

The proposal, a partnership between the state and the city of Miami, aims to create a 33-acre public space beneath the redesigned I-395 as part of the Signature Bridge project and will include a mile-long Heritage Trail, connecting neighborhoods across active rail tracks from Overtown to Biscayne Bay.

Meanwhile, the Underdeck will offer a variety of outdoor amenities, like an Amphitheater, event lawn, community plaza, children's play area, dog play area, multi-use court, and water feature!

Does this mean we'll see a new iconic landmark, recreational destination, and picturesque trail around Overtown?

Yes, we will in 2027!
